WELCOME!
Our appreciation to the Wyoming State Highway Patrol for this information.
Due to many patrol cars being hit while stopped at crash scenes or on traffic stops, a new law has been passed which went into effect on July 1, 2001. It is called the "Move Over Law". This law is designed to make work safer for State Troopers, Police Officers and other emergency services workers who have to respond to incidents on the states roads. The law requires drivers to slow their vehicles when passing a law enforcement or EMS vehicle which is parked along the roadway with the emergency lights (red, blue, amber or any combination of the above) activated, and to move into the lane farthest from the emergency vehicle when driving on an Interstate or other highway with two or more lanes traveling the same direction of the emergency vehicle.
When driving on two-lane road, the law requires drivers to slow to a speed 20 MPH less than the posted speed limit when passing a parked emergency vehicle, except when otherwise directed by a police officer. During the past five years, 14 parked Highway Patrol vehicle were damaged in crashes which occurred because a passing motorist failed to move over. Several Troopers are still recovering from injuries from these crashes.
